Balancing these, to be able to survive for the long term yet be daunting in the short term, is something I think about a lot. I wonder now that you've taken this sabbatical have there been any changes in your thoughts about balancing this out?

I feel like without taking calculated risks in the short term, I'll be setting up myself to fail in the long term. Looking back, I did take some risks (some wise ones and some dumb ones), and did fail at them, but I think the experience has been a valuable lesson.

Say with this sabbatical, I've been working a lot on my writing and trying to push myself to try something new with my writing each time, which can be dreadful. There's the risk of mistakes and failure (short-term). But if I just stick to what I know, I'll never improve and be a better writer (long term).

The goal here is to take short term actions benefit your long term goals. So to solve for that, figure out what your principles and values are, take the time to figure out what matters to you. Then you make your decisions and goals based on that. That way it becomes strategic and more meaningful.
